Fire Ant Classic- Drumline

Image
I did not have a flash to shoot this event which ended up being on the football field, so most my images turned out like crap. Half of them wouldn't color correct. On top of that, while we had the field in competition, I couldn't walk on the field. I stood by the fence in about a foot long width of space, therefore I couldn't shoot people in the back. I could only see the people in the front.  I text Sydney to check on settings since I didn't have a flash (and didn't think about breaking the cardinal sin of using pop-up flash) and she told me to run my ISO up to 4000-5000. That seemed a little ridiculous to me, but nothing else worked, and I was pretty desperate.  ISO: 5000 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/160 LENS: 70-200 I felt this was a good photo-journalistic picture while I was trying to get it, but of course, my luck it didn't turn out. If I had a flash it would've turned out so much better. All their drums are laying in front of them,

Drill Team

Image
ISO: 320 APERTURE: 2.8 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/30 LENS: 17-50 The lighting in the Black Box was extremely different than anything I've had to shoot so far. The fluorescent lighting is being shown down extremely brightly without having glass or anything to kind of muffle the light. I took a flash with me to shoot, but when I used it I discovered that it just made my subjects shine like crazy. My pictures came out EXTREMELY overexposed. So, I decided to turn my flash off and adjust my settings to the light already in the room.  The whole focus of the photo assignment was to capture an image that tells how crowded drill team is. The fact that I didn't use a flash was a good choice because I was so close to my subjects that no matter what that flash would be too bright for the room.  I feel happy with my background because it helps to show that drill team is cramped into a room. There are a million girls shoved into one picture with arms overlapping everywhere.  The cha

ISO: 100 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/10 This was a happy accident. I personally like this picture. Not that I would put it in the newspaper or yearbook, but I just think it's a good image. It wasn't originally supposed to be taken. It wasn't planned at all. I had him kneeling on his knees because he was too y'all that the white paper for high key was right behind his head. I took the green light (B200? I think?) and placed it behind him. I've had like no work with sillouettes prior to this. I knew what I wanted to get done, and I was winging it on how to get it. My idea was to back light him so he was a sillouette basically. I didn't want his front lit. The light saber was supposed to work just like a flashlight would during painting with light. I wasn't worried about that too much. My problem I ran into was that instead of the light carrying around him in almost a halo type glow, he was just blocking it. The only thing I could see lighting up w

Golf Practice

Image
ISO: 800 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/1600 I really enjoyed taking these shots. I did exactly what Smith told me to do; I got dirty and took a wide lens (17-50) under the golf ball. The way the lighting was made things awkward. I didn't have a flash, so my subject wasn't really lit well. I didn't know that I could break the cardinal rule of pop up flash, but now I do. I wish I could've gotten a good picture of her hitting the ball and having a good reaction, but I either got right before or right after. I sufficed for this. Of course I had to get help editing it, but I had to make everything as low as it would go on my histogram. Then I got the detail back in the sky. After I got my background fixed, I used the brush tool to lighten up my subject. ISO: 800 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/1600 I love this picture. The single thing I absolutely hate about this and want to give myself a good slap in the face

Water Change

ISO: 200 APERTURE: 11 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/250 LENS: 10-24 So, this was actually the assignment where I got asked to homecoming by this (cutie?) of a subject. :) Anyways, this was a very fun assignment. Carlie was the senior helping me with high key. (Was that correct spelling?) Just by the way, the umbrella light is super pretty. The focus of the assignment was to capture the subject imitating the face on the water bottle. We had two 400 light projector things on either side on the setup and an 800 with that umbrella on it in front of the subject. Since he was so tall, I either had to stand on a stool or make him kneel on his knees. I chose to make him kneel on his knees so that I could be on the same level as him no problem and not have to worry about keeping balance on a stool. The first couple of test shots on this had terrible shadows or a huge glare right in the middle of the face on the water bottle, so we had to keep adjusting the two 400 lights to not glare and corr

Patriotic Day

Image
ISO: 800 APERTURE: 2.8 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/200 LENS: 17-50 Patriotic Day was hard to shoot because not only does our school have very little spirit, but since our nation's national colors are so basic, people chose to wear regular tee shirts in a single color. The problem with that is that its not "patriotic." It just looks like they chose to wear an everyday tee shirt.  This picture has a nice background and foreground because it shows that the teacher is not necessarily being posed. It looks like she's just naturally sitting at her desk and teaching. ISO: 800 APERTURE: 2.8 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/200 LENS: 17-50 This was a last minute, "I need spirit day photo" image. I tried so hard to get this girl at her lunch then I saw her after school, so I snapped a picture there. The only thing I don't like is that she's looking down, so you can't tell if its that or if she's actually looking at her bag. I could have scooted a

Bacon Fry

Image
ISO: 500 APERTURE: 4.0 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/250 This isn't my favorite picture from the bacon fry, but i thought it represented the bacon fry sufficiently considering its showing a person picking up bacon to eat.  The bacon fry literally made me want to rip my hair out. I got there at 5:45 expecting to do my photo story and get pictures of people setting, but I've only had a crash course in flash so I had to wait until the sun came up about 6:30 (45 MINUTES LATER) so that I had natural light and my pictures actually turned out.  Apparently that's what I get for trying to be an early bird. Now that I'm coming back and looking at these with a fresh eye again, I think my bacon fry pictures turned out horrible to some stuff that I've been shooting here lately. I have no clue what I was thinking because they're all extremely dark and I couldn't figure settings out. I could've used this as an opportunity to get some really creative shots, but I g

Tx/Ark JV

Image
I have discovered a newfound love for shooting football. So far, I'm completely and utterly in love with shooting in the theatre and shooting football. The only problem with shooting JV is that the players mob up instead of in varsity where they actually play correctly and better.  ISO: 1600 APERTURE: 4.5 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/250 I like this picture a lot, especially after it didn't turn out with motion blurs because my shutter speed was adjusted correctly. I enjoy this shot because the main focus is on our guy. The ball is in the picture and the subjects are for the most part facing towards me. There's action going on in the shot. Looking at my settings now I don't really understand why I was shooting with such a high ISO, but I'm gonna guess that I was told to so I just went with it.  ISO: 1600 APERTURE: 5.0 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/250 I like this picture a lot, but I could have improved it by getting wider if at all possible, or by getting at a hig

This assignment was hard to shoot because  1.) I'm not technically allowed to shoot at the hospital without getting consent and filing paperwork and 2.) It was such abnormal lighting! I thought my pictures turned out fine. ISO: 2500 APERTURE: 3.5 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/125 I was extremely proud of myself for being able to expose a dark girl on a white background correctly. These photos didn't have to be edited a lot, which I think is a good thing. If the photo is honestly a good photo, you shouldn't have to mess with it a ton. It was hard shooting her on an elliptical because there's no way to shoot her without having something blocking her like that pole in this picture. I had to get her legs in the picture though because the story was over here tearing her ACL and recovering.

So, spirit days are terrible. Our school has no spirit whatsoever. ISO: 640 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/400

Paint The Pit

Image
I didn't get a ton of pictures of painting the pit because a lot went wrong with the students. Apparently, it was the second day they had to finish up and there were no teachers helping them. It took forever for them to finally go get the paint. When they finally got the paint, there were no nozzles for the ends of the sprayers, so they tried to paint to the best of their abilities. This is one of my favorites pictures that I managed to get. ISO: 200 APERTURE: 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/200 My favorite part of this picture is that my shutter speed was fast enough to capture the flinging paint. Even though her eyes are closed it could still look like she's looking down.
