UMHB Yearbook

I have been hired on staff as a photographer for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's yearbook, the Bluebonnet. I am expected to have a lot of work put into it as a photographer and in other areas such as writing, layout and design. I'm really excited about this opportunity because I've already switched my major and decided to major in Art with an emphasis in graphic design and minor in marketing.

Our staff is ridiculously smaller than my high school was, but it's the same kind of environment and work flow. This just means that more is expected of me. When I first walked in to the interest meeting the first week of school, two students approached me and asked if I was Savannah, as if I'm some kind of goddess or something, which flattered me, but still weirded me out a little bit. They seemed really nice. I later found out that one, Cameron is now my photo editor and the girl, Blair, is another photographer that I've quickly made friends with. Apparently, my adviser, Randy Yandell, has been singing my praises since he's seen my portfolio. That kind of caught me off guard because I hadn't thought much of it. It was just things I shot in high school, and after staring at my work for so long it just becomes a bunch of flaws staring back at me.

My over the phone interview into the program this summer with Mr. Yandell went perfectly even though I had expected it to be very intimidating. He first praised me for my portfolio and said that my work was wonderful. He then asked about my high school experience and went through the basic questions like "What are the three basics to exposure," "what is depth of field," and "what is dpi?" Of course I knew all these thanks to my wonderful adviser, Clint Smith, in high school. Mr. Yandell offered me the job on the spot and said to me that he had seen many college level photographers and students that didn't know the answers to those questions.

I had my first meeting for the yearbook where we discussed possible themes. Between two ideas, one of mine was selected for the running, "Calling All Crusaders," playing on social media and modern technology. There's an editors meeting tonight to make the final decisions, then next week we should pick up with assignments.
